Foam is the working structure beneath the fabric. It determines comfort, shape retention, support, and how well an upholstered piece holds up through years of use. A dining banquette, a family-room sofa, a helm seat, and an RV mattress may all use foam, but they do not ask the same thing of it. Selecting the right material means balancing firmness, density, thickness, moisture exposure, user weight, and the construction of the furniture itself.
Start With the Job the Cushion Must Do
Before comparing foam specifications, consider the piece in front of you. Is it a seat cushion that will be used every day? A back cushion meant to feel soft and relaxed? A boat berth where ventilation matters? Or a restaurant booth that needs to keep a crisp profile through heavy traffic?
Seat cushions need support and resilience. They must carry weight repeatedly without developing permanent low spots. Back cushions generally need less firmness, since their job is comfort and posture rather than primary support. Decorative pads can use softer materials because they are not expected to bear much load.
Thickness changes the result as well. A firm foam can feel comfortable in a thick sofa cushion but unforgiving in a thin boat seat. Conversely, a soft foam may feel pleasant in a deep cushion yet bottom out quickly when only two inches are available. Where space is limited, foam selection becomes more exacting because there is less material available to absorb pressure.
Density and Firmness Are Different Measurements

The ideal arrangement depends on body weight, sleep position, available height, and whether the mattress must bend or fit an irregular berth.
Marine, RV, and Moisture-Prone Areas
Marine cushions need to account for water, humidity, limited airflow, and frequent temperature changes. Standard foam may be suitable for protected interior seating, but exposed cockpit cushions, outdoor seating, and areas prone to dampness often benefit from reticulated or open-cell foam designed to drain and dry more readily.
Quick-drying foam is not a substitute for good cushion construction. Proper drainage, breathable materials, well-positioned zippers, and an upholstery design that avoids trapping water all matter. A marine cushion can fail early if water stays inside the cover, even when the foam itself is appropriate.
RV cushions face a related challenge: limited space and varying conditions. They may serve as both seating and sleeping surfaces, and they often need custom shaping around cabinetry, wheel wells, or curved walls. Here, the best foam is usually the one that provides support without taking up more room than the layout can spare.
Commercial and Hospitality Upholstery
Restaurants, waiting areas, healthcare settings, hotels, and office spaces need foam that can take repeated use while maintaining a clean, professional shape. Commercial seating is rarely the place to choose the softest available option. Edge breakdown, visible sagging, and compressed seat fronts can affect both appearance and customer comfort.
For these applications, durable foam and accurate patterning work together. The foam must fit the frame correctly, particularly at corners and edges, so the finished upholstery does not pull unevenly or develop premature wear. Depending on the project, material selections may also need to meet building, fire, cleaning, or operational requirements. Those details should be addressed before fabrication rather than after the upholstery is complete.
Consider Layering for Better Comfort and Appearance
A single foam grade is not always the best answer. Layering lets an upholsterer combine support, softness, and a tailored finish. A firmer foam core with a softer topper can provide a supportive seat that does not feel overly stiff. Adding polyester fiber wrap can soften the initial touch, fill out the cover, and reduce friction between the foam and fabric.
The trade-off is that layers add cost and can change the fit of the cover. They must be planned with the finished dimensions in mind. Too much wrap can make a cushion appear overstuffed or strain seams. Too little can leave the foam edges visible through thinner fabrics.
For a sharply tailored bench cushion, a simpler construction may be best. For a lounge chair or refined residential sofa, layered materials can create the fuller, more luxurious profile many clients want. The right choice is not about adding materials for their own sake. It is about building the feel and silhouette the project calls for.
Measure the Frame, Not the Old Foam
Old foam is often compressed, distorted, or cut inaccurately from a previous repair. Using it as the only pattern can repeat existing fit problems. Measure the actual frame opening, account for the thickness of the upholstery cover, and consider how much compression is needed for a neat fit.
Custom work becomes especially valuable when the shape is not square. Boat interiors, curved settees, window benches, helm seats, and built-in commercial seating often require precise templates and cuts. A cushion that is off by even a small amount can shift in use, wrinkle at the corners, or leave visible gaps.
